I don’t know about you, but my mailbox has been filling up with seed catalogs lately. I’m getting a little excited for what’s ahead! My granddaughter, Ellie, and I have been flipping through them together, circling our favorites and talking about what we might like to grow this year. No big decisions yet, but lots of dreaming and circling with Crayola markers. This time of year always does that to me. After the holidays, I’m usually itching to get outside and get my hands in the soil again, but it’s still too cold and too early to actually do much. So instead, my garden brain starts waking up quietly. Not in a rushed way. Just in a curious, hopeful way. I don’t think January needs to be about full-on planning or locking yourself into big decisions. For me, it’s more about paying attention. Noticing what excites me. Letting ideas sit for a bit. Enjoying the anticipation of what’s to come. Over the next few weeks, that’s the place I’ll be coming from here, too. We’ll ease back into thinking about gardens, talk through planning in a relaxed way, and focus on setting ourselves up for a season that feels enjoyable instead of overwhelming. Nothing urgent. Nothing you need to “keep up with.” Just staying gently connected to the garden during this slower stretch of winter. I’d love to know, as your garden brain starts to wake up, too… What are you finding yourself drawn to this year? More vegetables, more flowers, less maintenance, or something new entirely? Feel free to hit reply and tell me what’s been catching your eye lately. I love hearing from you. Happy growing! 🌱 Find me online: Website | Facebook | Facebook Group |

I hope you’re having a wonderful first few days of spring! This time of year is my FAVORITE. When the weather starts warming up enough to putz around the garden, my hopes and dreams for the season are at their peak, and I’m just itching to get things going! I know I’m not alone in this because I’ve been having more conversations lately about when it’s safe to start seeds or move plants outside. It reminded me of something really important I wanted to share with you. And that is understanding...
March is such a weird month in the garden, especially if you’re in the Midwest or similar climates. Just this week we had temps that hit 66° and I was outside cleaning out raised beds and prepping for cool weather crops with my grandbabies. But this weekend we’re expecting a couple inches of snow. Bipolar weather, for sure! These early spring temperature swings can make it really hard to know what you should be doing in the garden right now. One day feels like full-on planting season, and the...
I hope you’re settling into the final stretch of winter and starting to think about spring a little more each day. We’re supposed to be warming up to the 40’s and 50’s next week here in Southeastern Michigan and I am SO excited to finally get outside! Over the past couple of emails, I shared some seed starting tips, but today I want to back up just a bit and talk about garden planning. It’s tempting to jump into the season and just wing it, but a little planning now can make for a lot less...
